Supporting the UK home educating community. Be part of our move from an online magazine to a printed quarterly! Education is compulsory, school isn't..... Thousands of parents in the UK choose to educate their children outside of the school system.....this is known as home education. They do this for a variety of reasons and in a variety of styles. Whatever form it takes, home education is an amazing experience, full of challenges and wonder, and one of its strengths is the awesome community itself.  We know this because we are part of that community! We are Jane and Lorena and we home educate our own children - six of them between us. We launched EOS online in June 2010 as the kind of magazine we would have loved to read way back when we started. It draws on that strong community, pulling aspects together to support, encourage and inspire home educators across the UK and further afield and illustrating Home Education in Action! For the last four years the magazine has been published online only and free of charge. There have been 10 issues, full of articles, activity ideas, resources, reviews, news and more. We have had incredible support from home educators, including published writers and well known bloggers, who have provided both content and unfailing encouragement. Education Outside School Magazine does not purport to represent home educators, nor does it advise or make judgement on any particular approach to home education. Rather, we celebrate the variety within the community, the dedication of the parents and the awe-inspiring young people who are being educated at home. It was always our wish to go into print. It may be the digital age, but we know that people still enjoy a physical magazine. The requests we've had for a printed version appear to bear that out, so now's the time! What's in the magazine? The printed version will be very similar to our online issues to date - you can see them all here: www.issuu.com/educationoutsideschool Alongside our tried and tested mix of articles, activity ideas and reviews, the magazine will accept adverts, to support home educators who are running businesses and to let larger companies show you the services and products you might find useful. BUT advertising space will be limited as it is the content of the magazine which is most important to you and to us, and we will not run any adverts that appear to have no relevance to the home educating community. With your backing we can: Pay for printing costs up front Compensate our contributors for their time and dedication Move forward to planning future issues Stretch Goal: If we exceed our goal, we will use the additional funds to print more copies and have them available for purchase. We'll also put funds forward to the next issue, and the next, and the one after that! As a registered CIC (Community Interest Company), Reg No. 08824730, we support the home educating community and will use any profits for that community. Support starts immediately, with the publication of the magazine. Once it is sustainable, we'll be able to develop our ideas for using those profits, in consultation with other home educators! Read more about us on our website www.educationoutsideschool.co.uk Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Gogetfunding     We've planned this carefully to ensure that we will be able to deliver the printed version as long as our minimum pledge is reached. Jane is an experienced community publisher and is fully aware of the processes involved in getting a magazine to print. We keep costs low - apart from articles sent in by contributors, we do all the work ourselves, including web maintenance, editing, photography, design and layout and distribution. Working from home means that our running costs are minimal. Production costs for the printed version have been calculated with a high degree of conservatism - even a very short run of the magazine is financially viable to start with. Obtaining content is an ongoing challenge for any magazine. We have the support of some talented and dedicated home educators who regularly write for us and are talking to many more. We can also provide content ourselves.
