INTRODUCTION

As provided by 12 step drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital Road Map Guide booklet

The first step in anything we do in life is the beginning. Most often we are not even prepared and do not understand why we need to take a first step in a direction contrary to what we are used to but the rationale is that every human being at a stage in life would have to evaluate himself

Life may have been rough, uncomfortable, and full of rejections and embarrassment. We may have even felt like ending by committing suicide at a stage in life but in life we do not run away from challenges, rather you encourage yourself to face them with courage and confidence. Life does not give anybody what he/she wishes for but what you work hard for.

We may not feel comfortable knowing where we are presently. Most often we thought there was nothing wrong with us, except that the family, relatives, coworkers, employers, friends and society does not see eye to eye with what we stand for and what we are doing with our lives because we most often think any sickness should show some physical signs to warrant it. Interestingly, ours is a disease which is mainly with the mind so you cannot use your physical eyes to see and it is exhibited in the way you do your things on day to day basis. Therefore, it takes concerned people around you to notify and even seek for solution since you are not in the right position to know that there is a problem.

We may have visited so many places all in the quest to seek for solution but has failed us basically because we have not learnt to let go off our old habit. That is, we constantly go back only to engage in the behaviors of our past that took us to these place. We are now at the mercy of drugs, constantly engaging in it even to our own detriment(addiction) and unfortunately our bodies have developed some dependency on it such that without it we cannot do what we really want to or there is no motivation to do what we want to do on daily basis.

There are so many question you, the family, society, coworkers, the school authorities and employers may have been asking i.e. is recovery possible? Is there anything that really works? How can one gain freedom from addiction? Who can we turn to for help? Why is it that nobody seems to hear our cry for help? Is it possible I can bounce back to my old self?

Life may not have been nice in the past. Thinking about the past only brings memory of regrets and pains. This often makes you often get scared about what will happen to you in the future. Please pause for a moment, where do you find yourself now (rehabilitation Centre)? This may even aggravate the confusion you are confronted with in life but the truth is this, it is only now(present), the future can be a success.

It is in response to some of these many questions that the counselling unit headed by Dr. Kojo Sagoe, sought to implement a programme that will bring relief and total sobriety to individuals battling with addiction currently called ANKAFUL PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL DRUG/ALCOHOL RECOVERY PROGRAMME.

Our success story goes to buttress the facts that you can gain your recovery only if you will abide by the rules in the rehabilitation center. Having total life turn around stories by graduants and families, it makes us appreciate the facts that, so far what we have been doing is working but there is more room for improvement and that the main person to work for you is you (YOURSELF)

Please grab the opportunity you have presently and hold on fast to it is in the present change or doing things that can make the future a success.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE 12- STEPS PROGRAMME

Twelve step programme is a set of guiding principles outlining the cause of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. The twelve steps were first published in the book, alcoholic anonymous: the story of how more than one hundred men have recovered from alcoholism in 1939. The method was then adopted and became the foundation of othertwelve steps programmes such as Narcotic Anonymous, Over Reaction Anonymous, Co-dependents Anonymous and Debtors Anonymous.

As summarized by the American Psychological Association, the process involves the following

A. Admitting that one cannot control ones addiction or compulsion.

B. Recognizing a greater power that can give strength

C. Examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (facilitator in this case)

D. Making amends for these errors.

E. Learning to live a new life with a new code of behaviours

F. Helping others that suffer from the same addictions or compulsions

Twelve steps methods have been adopted to address a wide range of substance abuse and dependency problems. Over millions now employ twelve step principles for recovery. Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A), the twelve step fellowship, was founded in 1935 by Bil Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith known by AA members as “Bil W” and “Dr. Bob” in Akron, Ohio (United State of America).

In the twelve step programme, human structure is symbolically represented in three dimensions:

1. Physical

2. Mental

3. Spiritual

The problems the group deal with are understood to manifest themselves in each dimension.

For addicts, the physical dimension is best described by the allergy- like bodily reaction resulting in compulsion to continue using substance after the initial use.

The statement in the first step is that the individual is “powerless” over the substance that the lack of control over this compulsion which persists despite any negative consequences that may be endured as a result.

The mental obsession is described as the cognitive process that causes the individual to repeat the compulsion behavior after some period of abstinence, either knowing that the result will be an inability to stop or operating under the delusion that the mind of the addict affords concerning whether to drink or use again.

The illness of the spiritual dimension, or “spiritual malady” is considered in all twelve- step groups to self centredness. This model is not intended to be a scientific explanation; it is only a perspective that twelve- step organizations have found useful. The process of working the steps is intended to replace self – centredeness with a growing moral consciousness and willingness for self- sacrifice and unselfish constructive action, in the twelve step programme, this is known as Spiritual Awakening. In twelve-step programme, “Spiritual Awakening” is believed to developed most frequently, slowly over a period of time.

It is suggested that members regularly attend group meeting and share their particular recovery problems. In accordance with the programme, emphasis is placed on self-admission by members of the problems they are recovering from. It is in this spirit that members often identify themselves along with an admission of their problems. Eg; Hi I am Kojo and I am alcoholic.

Confidentiality is a key thing in this programme. Every member is encouraged to respect each other’s confidentiality at any place outside the programme.

BACKGROUND RATIONALE TO THE DRUG REHABILITATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS SUPPORTPROJECT

Drug abuse and addiction is a disease state of the mind which renders victims lose their power to choose anything else but drug. It’s a global menace and has destroyed lots of our productive youths worldwide. Several different situations can result into one falling victim of drug addiction and no matter that circumstance, it’s a reason enough to get people to suffering from this disease. A replica scenario is the state of some 20 clients at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Ghana, West Africa, who for one reason or the other are suffering from the disease of addiction and need help through drug rehabilitation to assist them into getting well and staying in recovery. The irony of the situation is that despite the willingness to giving up drugs and enrolling in rehabilitation to get their sanity restored, they genuinely do not have the requisite funds to get them through the program due to their social, economic, financial and family background.

Drug Rehabilitation and Social Support Group in collaboration with other stakeholders and the 12 Steps Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center decided to embark on this fundraiser to help raise USD 50,000.00 to assist these individuals not only in drug rehabilitation but also a social skills training center that will help train clients on skills development and operate as a local revenue generation venture to help assist future drug abuse victims who may find themselves genuinely suitable for such support.
