On March 11 2017, Mercury Bitsuie and Shawn Etsitty were traveling to Queen Creek AZ to visit relatives. On their way, a truck with confederate flags cut them off in an unsafe manner while shouting racist remarks through rolled down windows. Out of anger as well as frustration of the hateful environment being created with this symbol of hate to our fellow POC (People of Color) Relatives, Mercury and Shawn confronted the two individuals and as soon as confrontation started, Shawn took down the Confederate flag from the truck. Six adults came at the aide of the two individuals driving around with this confederate flag, by confronting Mercury as well as Shawn in a very aggressive and threating way. Mercury and Shawn had no other choice protect themselves from this aggressive and hatful group twice in the parking lot until hateful group backed off after Shawn defended himself from four individuals trying to attack him.
Once things settled down Mercury and Shawn drove off once hate group backed off, to be only pulled over by the Gilbert Police, then Charge Shawn Etsitty with Theft. A week later the Attorney of one of the individual driving the truck with the confederate flag is accusing Shawn that it was an assault on him and want to take Shawn court to pay for physical damages. Shawn and Mercury traveled back down to Phoenix from their home on the Navajo reservation to outreach with some local grass organization such as LUCHA-Living United for Change in Arizona to find the right attorney that can help Shawn win his case. They give directions to CIMA Law Group, a grassroots law group will be representing Shawn Etsitty in both the theft case against the city of Gilbert as well as the assault case with the family of the individual who threaten the lives of Mercury Bitsuie and Shawn Etsitty that evening. We are asking are dear relatives for donations so he can get represented by CIMA Law Group, the Attorney’s fee is $2,400.00 with a $1,000.00 down to start working on his case asap. The Court date for Shawn Etsitty is set for June 8th in Gilbert Arizona.
Thank you all for your support, all of our relatives deserve to live a safe community environment.
