Leevan Needs A Bone Marrow Transplant. Give a Little, Save A Life!

Leevan’s Story

• At 34, Leevan Solomon was in great form. He’d transformed his love of fitness into a job he loved – inspiring, advising and training clients at the gym.
• When not at work, he was guiding hikers, ensuring their safety and enjoyment as they explored Trinidad’s mountains and forests together with Trail Trekkers TT.
• Ask anyone about Leevan and they’ll tell you he’s a positive force, wherever he happens to be.
• These days he’s encouraging and cheering medical staff, fellow patients and his own mum, as he waits in hospital for clinic appointments and frequent blood transfusions.
• Last year Leevan was diagnosed with a rare condition, bone marrow failure, also called aplastic anaemia. Blood transfusions every three weeks or so provide temporary relief - till he needs another.
• With bleeding gums, palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath and weakness, Leevan struggles to do simple activities, especially when his blood counts are at their lowest.
• Gym reps and hiking trails are unthinkable. Minor injuries risk severe bleeding. Minor infections risk serious illness. When at home, family mask-up to spend time with him.
• His doctors told him a bone marrow transplant is his only chance at a cure. Meanwhile, for Leevan, every month that passes is like life on the edge of a precipice. It’s a relief to still be alive, but it’s a hard place to be.

How You Can Help

• Doctors say a bone marrow transplant is his only hope for a cure. This procedure isn’t available in Trinidad.
• Leevan is fundraising towards a transplant in Columbia, where it costs less than in the UK or USA.
• So far, fundraising efforts with family and friends raised TTD$70K. But he’ll need at least TTD$1.5 million.
• TTD$1.5M is about USD$220,000 or GBP£175,000

Expenses include:

• finding a matching bone marrow sample
• having the transplant treatment
• having follow-up care
• air travel
• living expenses, including accomodation, for potentially six months or more.

With aplastic anaemia, time isn’t a luxury. The clock is always ticking.

The Goal is Within Reach

• Two hundred and twenty thousand US dollars sounds like a lot, till you realise if enough of us chip in, it’s within reach.
• If 125 different people give USD$10 every day, we’ll achieve our goal in under six months.
• And since we’ve all got different pockets, we could look at it another way:
• If 13 different people give USD$100 every day, we’ll also achieve our goal in under six months.
