I'm currently working with some gifted kids in public schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico who are struggling in going to school because of family financial problems. Those kids are most of the time away from school because they have to participate in taking care of the family expenses, so they work during the day instead of getting an education that will surely help them get a better job later.
My work with those kids is to create bonds between them and some university students who are working on various engineering projects. The projects include a solar car, a race car, some helicopters and so on. The engineering students are all from university of New Mexico and they volunteer to work with the kids on the designing and building of their cars and machines.
As a coordinator, I have been in charge of providing tools to the kids to work with, along with means for their commuting and meals during the time they are at the camp. All the program is informal and is made possible by the involvement and commitment of everyone and by the volunteering. But, the material has to be purchased and we now need funding for that.
We are also planning on letting the kids build their own cars, instead of just working with the university students. They could therefore keep the car, display it during schools shows days, and maybe take part to some races that are held all over the country. It's a great goal that needs to be funded. And we are looking forward to reaching anyone who believe in our project and is willing to help keep our kids in school, and not send them in streets, working or begging for few money for their needs.
