|My name is Mpho Betsha - Team Manager to the athlete development team which I am seeking to raise funds for. The development programme is operating under a Non Profit Company, namely: L. Hejana and Development Fund, which was established by Luthando Hejana - a committed road runner based in a township called Mdantsane, in East London, in the Eastern Cape, whom through his passion, took onto developing young athletes who stem from disadvantage backgrounds.
Over the years, Luthando has personally developed himself as a seasoned and successful runner, without permanent assistance of a professional mentor or coach. Through dedication, he has been able to acquire numerous skills on how to apply his trade in a meaningful way. He identified the raw talent in the Mdantsane township and believed that with the correct training - the children would be able to carve out successful careers from the sport that they love so dearly.
Formal training began in March 2016 (and takes place everyday after school at the NU6 sports field) - with the main vision of helping to clean up the streets of the crime/poverty stricken Mdantsane, by keeping the youth out of drug abuse/gansterism, and also by promoting and active and healthy lifestyle. The team currently comprises of 15 boys and girls from ages 8-19 years.
The need for fundraising arises from the fact that the development has become a source of hope for many of the athletes, providing running gear, a sound meal during training/races, nutrition, transportation and/or accomodation to the various events.
The survival of the team depends entirely on the generosity and support from our community at large, and even through challenges such as no stable financial assistance, no proper training equipment and running gear, lack of supplements during and after training - these athletes take pride in the sport and remain UNSTOPPABLE!
Short term goals: developing confident athletes who are able to look beyond any situation, to compete successfully (i.e. qualifying to run South African Champions each year).
Special mention goes out to four of our athletes that have just returned from representing the province at the SA Half Marathon Championships that took place in Port Elizabeth, on the 27 July 2019.
Long term goals: personal development of athletes through exclusive training, proper sports nutrition and the promotion of the importance of education.
|Funds raised will be allocated to the following areas:
Running gear and training equipment
Travel, meals (and accommodation for out of town events)
Nutrition (food) for training and racing purposes
Educational support (school related needs)
|The donations will have a positive and long lasting impact on our organisation, as it will enable us to overcome all obstacles were currently facing in helping to develop these young athletes. It will help us nurture and possibly grow this sport into our township at large. And will be a personal boost for our athletes to be able to run (i.e. in new running shoes, etc)|
