Hello everyone, After putting it off for... a few years, 2014 is the year I have finally decided I should complete the Great North Run! Its been a goal of mine for a while now, so im looking forward to finally ticking it off (well, hopefully) my life to-do list. I've decided to raise some money for charity in the process.

The charity i've picked is the Angkor Hospital for Children, based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Mark and I were able to visit the hopsital on our recent travels around South East Asia, and we were really taken aback by the MASSIVE need for greater medical care  in Siem Reap, and all of Cambodia. Here are a few facts we were made aware of concerning Cambodian children and their families:

  • 1 out of 77 Children in Cambodia dies before his/her 5th birthday
  • 28% of the population survive below the poverty line of $1.25 per person 63,000 live with HIV/Aids
  • The average gross national income is just $615 per person

Angkor Hospital for Children works to provide FREE medical care to over 150,000 impoverished children every year who arrive from from severely impoverished homes, and communities that experience many issues that come with poverty.

Their vision is to provide Cambodian children with access to quality medical care wherever they live, regardless of their ability to pay (some families even sell their houses to pay for their journey to AHC as they live so far away).

Angkor Hospital for Children exists as a center for excellence in pediatric health care and training, fostering development and expansion of the public health care system. During our visit, Mark gave blood donations and left some money and messages of support. However, I would love to be able to continue to raise money for such a fantastic cause.

Spending a bit of time in Cambodia we learnt a lot about the countrys troubled past and the Khmer Rouge - a horiffying regime which saw the death of over 1.5 million people between 1975-1979. We were truly shocked at how recently this had occured, yet we had heard so little about it in our life time. Educated individuals were targeted by the Khmer Rouge, meaning Cambodia was left with less than 50 doctors in the entire country by 1979.

The Angkor Hospital for Children not only provides free medical care to all those who need it, but it is also committed to providing continuing health care edcuation to both medical staff and local communities. On top of this, they reimburse travel costs, provide food and sleeping materials to families during their stay.

I'm trying not to go on a massive waffle-a-thon here, so if you want to learn more about AHC, here is the link to their website: http://angkorhospital.org/about-us/

This is a cause I am really passionate about, and would sincerely appreciate it if you would be kind enough to leave a donation. As AHC isn't a 'UK registered charity', I am going to transfer all of the money I raise directly to their website, following completion of the run.  Massive, gigantic, HUAGE thank you to anyone who is able to donate.  Jubilee  xxx
