IVAN is the result of a conjunction of artistic and human elements at the service of a cinematographic author piece that expresses, from an unique and particular narrative, and from a powerful visual poetics, those aspects hidden in the depths of the imagination of the brazilian writer and director Daniel Manzini.
The Creative Process of IVAN
The feature film IVAN, was born from a project that sought to integrate a professional team from the cinematographic area with people who had the will to express themselves artistically through the audiovisual and had no experience in the area. Ivan was totally filmed in São Francisco Xavier, in the interior of São Paulo, a city that has approximately 4000 inhabitants and is located in the Vale do Paraíba. Initially, the project had funding from the Municipal Culture Fund of São José dos Campos, and had a budget of R $ 100.000,00 for its first stage of realization. (preproduction and shooting).
Synopsis
One of the issues that is addressed in the film is the social inclusion of people with physical deformity, since the film has as starting point the main character, a 17 year old boy who has a cranio-facial deformity. This is the affair that permeates the entire film, where Ivan, creates a world aside and through his condition, interacts and resignifies what surrounds him. Form this point personal inquiries of the character are problematized and also some intrinsic to modern society. On the other hand, Ivan’s parents, Sonja and Armando, bring the viewer the opportunity to observe and reflect on common facts of the lives of parents that carry the full weight of feeling responsible for the life of a child with a serious deformity. This implies deep reflections about the affective field of the couple, giving arise to a psychological drama that borders on madness.

Lila Cairo • Plastic Artist
Poster developed from the painting “Sonja”, oil on canvas 50 x 70cm, by the Brazilian artist Lila Cairo. The techniques used for the execution of the work are based on the methods used in Renaissance painting, more specifically by the artists of Tenebrism, whose main exponent is Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio.
The presence of the contrast between light and shadow, one of the main characteristics of the chiaroscuro technique, is evident in the film’s photography, and also is present in it’s graphic material. As in the work of Caravaggio, who represented sacred figures through portraits of real people, street habitants and prostitutes, IVAN contrasts the sacred and the mundane bringing to clarity the beauty of what is avoiding exposure to light. The importance of using the chiaroscuro technique in the composition of the canvas that would be the image of the film's poster, resides in the technical and poetic exchanges between the film and the movement strongly represented by Caravaggio.
