Campaign Story
“When one teaches, two learn” Robert Heinlein
Giving a local teacher access to profesional teacher development is one of the most valuable ways we can help support and grow the skills of the local primary school with the aim to help raise the literacy levels and overall quality of education in the village.
Through La Choza Chula and our partnership with Teachers-2-Teachers International, El Paredón's primary teachers have been invited to participate in an international teacher's conference in Antigua, Guatemala.
The conference will focus on hands-on learning mathematics for early and elementary years - using maths tools and found objects to engage students in meaningful hands-on learning experiences. It will build on the fantastic teacher workshops that were a huge success earlier this year when T2T-i visited us in the village with a team of volunteer teachers sharing skills and teaching methods.
How will the money be spent?
We aim to raise $350 to cover accommodation and transport for 7 primary school teachers to attend as well as our local librarian (at La Choza Chula Buena Vista Library) and La Choza Chula's Education Manager. Choosing the most practical and economical options available we have budgeted $39 per person.
Fortunately participation in the conference is free and materials and a lunch are provided each day. However being located on the rural southern coast with extremely low wages means food, transport and accommodation can be costly for the teachers.
Any further funds raised will go towards our core funding for the Buena Vista Library that supports the primary school through creative educational activities and hosts our successful school holiday programme.
The impact
Enabling our local primary teachers to participate in this world-class teacher development opportunity means that the skills gained can then be brought back and developed in the village to have an impact in their classrooms. We believe these teachers have the potential to be local leaders in education and could continue to share these skills with other teachers in the local region - helping to create a brighter future in El Paredón and beyond.
Read our Education Manager, Maggie's blog to find out more about how we are working to raise literacy levels in the village through our education programmes.

For any amount that you are able to give, thank you for investing in the professional development of these teachers and the future of the children that they teach.
