PRESS RELEASE:
22 June 2017
“I Wish…” is a performance project that is currently being produced by Yarisha Singh and co-directed by living dance legend, Adele Blank, Lexi Parolis and Geoff Hyland. Adele is one of the first Contemporary dance pioneers in South Africa who continues to teach, choreograph, and direct at the age of 75 as well as remaining very influential in outreach work. Yarisha danced professionally in top ballet, contemporary and Flamenco companies in SA. She has worked under the directorship of the country’s best and also taught, choreographed and directed productions for numerous years.
This production is inspired by Yarisha’s four year old girl who expressed her great wish to watch her ex-professional dancer mother perform again. Her wish motivated Yarisha to get moving and make her daughter’s dream come true. After talking to some friends, ex-colleagues and her mentors, Yarisha soon learnt that there were a number of ex-professional dancers who were also super keen to return to the stage again and many excitedly came forward volunteering their expertise for this production.
Since the idea was born, Yarisha has managed to round up a inspiring group of performers all of whom have retired from the stage for the same reason - to become parents and raise their children. Although Yarisha now runs two companies that have nothing to do with performing and the stage, she will always be a dancer and creator of dance at heart. When dance opportunities such as these arise, Yarisha will always be driven to grab the bull by the horns and return to the stage, her first love!
The production, to date, has over 30 ex-professional dancers and flamenco musicians who stemmed from 5 different companies across South Africa including Cape Town City Ballet, Joburg Ballet, La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre and Free Flight Dance Company. They will also include dance legends from the earlier eras. The performers are now coming together from 3 cities to unite on a stage on 23rd September 2017 at the Zip Zap Circus Dome on the Foreshore for a performance that is bound to thrill audiences.
All the proceeds from this production will go towards Zip Zap Circus School’s Outreach Program, called Dare to Dream as well as StreetSmart SA which raises funds for social and educational upliftment programmes for street children in South Africa. Adele Blank teaches dance to the Zip Zap kids regularly so there is a strong connection to their work.
