On the 23rd of April the Deputy Chairperson of SASCO UCT noted with anguish the trauma experienced by our fellow South Africans in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal. Since the initial incident of heavy rainfall due to Mid-Tropic Cyclones, areas North and South of Durban as well as Kwabhaca, Mbizana, Ngqeleni, Lubhacweni village (Alfred Nzo Municipality) and Port St Johns Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape. There is also the expectation of Heavy rainfall in the South of the Western Cape near Hermanus. According to Shamiela Fischer from Eyewitness News following reports on the death of 51 people in Durban, 3 lives have been claimed in the EC. In total more than 1450 people have been affected and displaced by these unexpected and turbulent weather conditions. The South African Weather Service warns of severe thundershowers and worsening weather is expected.

Homes have been carried away by mudslides and extreme flooding, churches and Hindu temples have been damaged and collapsed with university buildings also affected. As reported by Kat Hopps of Express in the UK. Disaster relief is necessary and we, the SASCO UCT branch, want to follow the lead taken by President Cyril Ramaphosa in addressing this issue as residents experience power outages.

Assist us as we aim to console those in dire straits. We stand for community work and helping where we can.
