Houston, let’s solve a problem

Team 3Geared has been successfully participating in FLL for 3 seasons.

After winning first place in the national competition in Croatia, we had our greatest success yet in the regional final in Celje, Slovenia.

We had great marks in all four categories and with that, ensured our spot in the world final in Houston.

We are one of the 108 best teams in the world, and we will be the only team that will represent Croatia in Houston.

We want to go to Houston because we consider it to be a great chance to learn from the best of the best and improve our own skills.

We are 3Geared, a team of 8 young roboticians ranging in age from 12 to 15 years old, who operate from the Gradionica association.

The Gradionica association has been operating since 2016, and it’s goal is to promote skills from the STEM area. We do this with the help of Lego Education, a program that, through experimentation and project learning enables trainees to engage in discovering and adopting knowledge in the fields of science, physics, mechanics, programming and robotics while simultaneously learning about teamwork and collaboration.

FIRST Lego League (FLL) is a multidisciplinary competition which requires skills in robotics, scientific research, teamwork and entrepreneurship, and is held in 98 countries all around the world with over 320 000 participants coming from 34 000 teams.

It’s composed of four categories:

The project, in which the teams have to identify and research a relevant problem, of course inside of the current theme,

Robot game, in which the goal is to build a robot which efficiently solves all the assigned missions in a time frame of two and a half minutes,

Technical interview, in which the construction and the programming of the robots is graded,

Core values, in which the goal is to promote good sportsmanship and cooperation in the competition.

Motivated with success we decided to try even harder.

This competition, FLL, became our norm.

We work all day, write and send emails, document everything and most of the time we spend at each other's houses or in Gradionica, but no matter how hard we try, no matter how many sleepless nights we spend working, we need an amount of money which is beyond our scope.

For the flight tickets, registration fee, accommodation, food and other costs we need around 12 000€ to 16 000€.
