In July 2016 we discovered that I was pregnant with our first baby. In October 2016 our Gynae confirmed that we were having a baby girl. The excitement was just on another level. We immediately knew her name, and started making all these plans. The first one was that when she was 6 months old, we were going to get her ears pierced for her first earrings. I planned girls drives and us listening to Music...Ballet Classes....everything a Mom would want to do for and with her baby Girl. Isabella Chedie was born on the 2nd of March 2017. When she was born, it was discovered that she did not have any outer external ears or ear canals. This was never picked up in any of the scans that were done. After a while we received the diagnosis. This is a rare condition called Bilateral Atresia which affects every 1 in 10 000 babies. Of the 1 in 10 000 only 10% of Babies have it bilaterally...Unfortunately our baby was the rarest, the 10% of the 1 in 10 000. After much research, I found the answer to our prayers. Dr John Reinisch from Los Angeles can do ear reconstruction surgery when our baby is 3 years old however the cost is very excessive. The cost per ear just for canals is in the region of $40 000, and the cost per ear for thals.e pinna (external ear) is also $40 000. That could possibly total R2 000 000. When Bella is 2 and a half years old, we will be able to determine via a CT scan if she is eligible for ear canals. She will definitely be a candidate for the External Ear however only a CT scan will determine if they can do ear canals as well because this will aid with the view of the development of the inner ear and middle ear. Hopefully before then we can raise enough to give our baby girl the gift of ears.
