I would like to turn your immediate attention to a population of horses at Imittos which, due to not finding food and/or water, or being rejected by the herd, descend from the southern slope of Imittos to Koropi. As a result, they cross roads, dangerous spots and people’s yards and fields, thus putting themselves and human life at grave risk.

My goal is to gather as many stray horses as possible in a fenced area, to have the males neutered and to provide medical treatment to those who need it. Then, some of them could be released back to their familiar grounds while some others could be transferred to more suitable areas for them to continue to live more calm and happy.

These horses are constantly reproducing and their number is steadily rising (currently estimated at around 80 animals, split in separate groups). As a result, they can NOT find food and water while stronger herds are chasing away weaker ones in their struggle for food. By neutering the male horses, the population will stabilize and eventually shrink, there will be less competition for food and water and the animals should gradually return further up the mountain as the only reason they risk contract with humans is food and water!

This problem has been lingering for at least a decade and past efforts have been limited and insufficient to produce a solution while no formal authority has ever assumed responsibility all these years. I took the initiative to feed and water a small group of 4 such (male) horses on a daily basis so as these animals do not move further down the mountain and cross to a more densely populated area. However, I cannot continue this serious commitment for long and these animals should either be moved further up the slope again or be immediately contained to be neutered and then released.

There are reports of people seeing a herd of 3-5 horses moving dangerously close to Varis Koropiou Avenue. A solution must be found IMMEDIATELY before a serious accident happens and we mourn victims!

I feel compelled to publicly plead these horses’ case and ask for help! This demanding project requires a considerable amount of time, sufficient funding and knowledgeable volunteers to help handle the horses. I really hope I can make this happen…I hope that all together we can make it happen!

The foals of the segregated pack are still breastfeeding. In a few months the next generation of foals is about to be born. The mares are being impregnated every year. We continue performing castrations (neutering) to prevent further increase of the population after this year’s expected foaling. This segregated pack

We organised a clearing out of the site the segregated pack is being fed as it became full of horse poop. This was making it difficult for us to place clean food down but also unpleasant for the nearby residents (there are houses around). The people living there are caring

It is a sad day for us today, as our beloved “Black” is no longer with us.The first time we set eyes on him, injured and emaciated, we pledged to do whatever we could to offer him some comfort during his last years (as the horse was already quite old).. . . . .

3 more castrations…Up until today our team, with the invaluable help of horse vet Pavlos Antoniou, has concluded 5 castrations! The number seems small, but it is a really strong start. Our intention is not to intervene with the nature of these horses, and this action would not be even considered
