Campaign Story
On a recent holiday to Sri Lanka, as we traveled back from the East Coast, we almost ran over a dog that was hobbling across the road. The dog was emaciated and limping, covered in a skin rash. He looked pathetic with big resigned eyes. I knew he would not survive long if we just left him there so we drove to the nearest town and thankfully found a vet who agreed to treat the dog. But sadly we had to release him to the street a few days later since the vet had no means to look after him and we were on holiday not living in Sri Lanka.
Upon my return to Belgium I decided that I would not abandon that dog or others like him. We had seen puppies by the side of the road and dogs on the hard shoulder of a motorway....Something had to be done. I contacted several shelters in Sri Lanka and the UK, but none had operations in that area.
So I decided with the help of the vet to set up a feeding program for 30 dogs in the area, twice a week (as a minimum to start with). The cost is 10$ per feed or 20$ a week.
I would like to raise enough money to cover 6 months of food or US$520. I hope to find other ways to fundraise as well but could not wait until that happened because these dogs are in a bad way. So I am reaching out to all animal lovers out there who believe that innocent animals should not be allowed to suffer needlessly.
