Moving back home to the beautiful Northwest
This is a campaign to help our friend return to the Northwest U.S. where she was born and raised. She's been living in the Southwest for ten years but dreams of the forests and ocean back home. We hope you'll help us make her dream come true.
On the Road!
Gremlins moved our updates to the bottom of the sidebar, so I’m posting the latest exciting news here too.
Mary Ann has started her big journey. I got this message from her today.
I'm on the road!!! I've made it as far as Gallup, New Mexico, 16 miles from the Arizona border!
Tomorrow, I'll try to get through Arizona (It's about 300 miles across) and drive this rig into California. Then I intend to go right at Bakersfield, and then head up I-5.
I'm coming home. I really am!
Only four more campaign days left, and our hero has run up new expenses, so please help if you can. Those beautiful kilims and my audiobooks and ebooks will reward your good heart and generosity.
Why we want to help
Our friend is a remarkable woman who has fallen into a tough situation and needs some financial help to get out of it. She's worked hard all her life, and helped other people all the way. Now she finds herself broke, disabled and unemployed. At 60-plus years of age, she wants to go home. She has a reasonable chance of finding work she's qualified to do in the Northwest, and she has friends there. It's understandable that she grows more and more homesick for the cool green forests and mountains where she was born and raised.
At times in the past when Mary Ann had money, she was exceedingly generous with it, and gave away thousands of dollars to help people with medical bills and legal fees. Those friends are in no position to return the favor. Some have died. Now that she longs to go home, it seems like our turn to pay it forward for her.
She was invited by friends to come to the Southwest for a project that didn't materialize. There she settled into a tiny low-rent house in a rural community and struggled to find a new direction. She was sixty when she felt a calling to help people with mental health problems and went back to school. She graduated with a master's degree in Clinical Social Work a few years later.
Searching for work
Since then Mary Ann has been searching for work as a clinical social worker, without success. The local agencies have had budget cuts, and the few jobs available require Spanish speaking skills. Disability and pain from a serious back injury prevent her returning to her previous jobs, so she has been living on a very meager income for some years.
But in Washington State no Spanish is required and her degree gives her many more options for finding work.
How she'll make the move
Mary Ann wants to fly up to the Seattle area and try to find a modest place to live and, hopefully, good work. Then she'll return briefly and load up a U-Haul truck and drive back home, at last.
Mary Ann is now in the Seattle area on her exploratory trip. See the updates tab for details.
She's not in a position to give you rewards for your donations, but I am, and I want to. Take a look at the very special rewards that are available to you and see if there's something you'd love to own or give as a gift. Your donation will be rewarded with beautiful or valuable items at a great discount - and a warm-hearted thank you from all of her friends.
A personal thank you email with a digital photo of the stunning scenery around Seattle
$65 or $100 donation
One of these hand woven Turkish kilim rugs.
Newsflash! There are now more kilims available for donors. As they are hand made the sizes are variable, but I am personally selecting larger ones for the higher donation category. They will be similar to the examples you can see by clicking the photo.
A very rare opportunity for a one-on-one coaching session with me by telephone.
For descriptions of these rewards look in the sidebar on the right, or click on the photos to find more detailed information.
