Campaign Story
GETWISE – SCHOOL FOR NEURO SKILLS(Special Needs School)
MASA (Meningitis Assoc of SA) is proud to annouce the opening of a new school for children with disabilities in South Africa in 2017
We are hoping two build 2 classrooms with facilities and employ educated Teachers
As noted in the 2011 World Report on Disability, there are three broad health conditions associated with
disability: infectious diseases such as HIV and AIDS, TB, encephalitis, meningitis, measles, mumps and
poliomyelitis, malaria. However, the relationship between health conditions and disabilities is complicated and determined by interrelated factors. Health conditions are strongly influenced by a child’s exposure to
environmental factors such as malnutrition, or access to sanitation or health care
School System in South Africa
If not already determined before entering school, identification of a child’s disability in mainstream schools often occurs late or not at all. Many educators lack adequate assessment skills and are unable to determine the level of a child’s impairment and the type of support required. A lack of provision of timely support results in learners not being able to achieve to their maximum academic potential.
Children with disabilities are more likely to live in traditional dwellings and informal settlements than their non disabled counterparts. The latter fact probably explains why children with disabilities have somewhat lower access to adequate water and sanitation.
