Help Uriah HEAR

Uriah Linley, born 10^th April 2018 was healthy, strong and reached all his mile stones like most babies do but at 9months old, his parents realized there could possibly be a problem with his ability to hear as he was not speaking or making baby sounds and was not reacting to voices or sounds. The very next day his mother Carina Linley sought an appointment at an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist in Pretoria where they checked his ears out, went to an audiologist for testing and eventually had to have an ABR test done where he was put under local anesthetic and his brain and ears were tested. It was on that same day that his parents hearts broke with the test results received saying that Uriah was deaf in his left ear and partially deaf in his right ear….

We immediately had molds made that same day and 2 days later hearing aides were fitted into both ears. The transformation was incredible but not enough for him to be able to talk and lead a normal life. His hearing in both ears is so severe that hearing aides would only benefit him slightly. He would need cochlear implants put in before the age of 2 years in order for him to be able to communicate like a person with normal hearing and not have to rely on other ways of communicating like lip reading or sign language. His parents have sought the advise of specialists at the EAR INSTIUTE in Queenswood Pretoria, Dr. Duane Mol at the EAR & EYE CLINIC in Johannesburg & the COCHLEAR division of Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town who have all advised the same thing – he needs to undergo surgery and have cochlear implants done in both ears before 2 years of age for him to have the best possibility of leading a “normal life”

His mother Carina is currently taking Uriah to speech therapy on a weekly basis and once a month check up’s and doing everything possible to help him get the best care he needs in order to start speaking.
Cochlear implants do not come cheap and the waiting list at the government hospitals would make getting implants almost impossible. Dr. Duane Mol can perform the surgery at a rate R65000 cheaper than the other specialist Uriah was seeing.

Our aim is to get at least 1 cochlear implant for his left ear by 18months (September 2019) and do the right ear just before 2 years old. In order to have both implants done we need your help to raise R712000. Technology has allowed our boy with the sweetest personality to lead an absolutely normal life.
