Help Toto the Puppy Fight PDA!

Toto is our 4-month pomeranian. She had been a happy girl around us until she was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriousus (PDA) and liver problem by the vet of City University of Hong Kong’s Animal Hospital in early May. The illness is fatal and surgery is the only way to help her.

PDA surgery is an operation that blocks the extra vein which is supposed to diminish after birth. The extra duct causes interruption of the blood flow in the heart. The contingent heart defect causes the patient pressure in the lungs and as time goes by, the heart grows in size and exhausts in the final stage. The damage is irreversible by any means. Toto's heart was revealed to be bigger than normal and unwanted fluid had run into her lungs which caused her troubles in breathing. In order to save her, she underwent the surgery on 4th May, 2021. The operation was smooth and she is now recovering at home. However, it is still uncertain if everything is yet to be okay. Medication and constant checking are inevitable in the long run.

The heart surgery and treatment has cost HKD110,000 and the cost for ongoing medication and follow-up treatments of her liver is yet to know. The amount includes the expense for the heart surgery (~HKD60,000), anesthesia and the care in ICU before and after the operation. The exact amount is far more than that. The huge amount is not an easy amount for my family and to ease my parents’ burden, I reach out for help here. I do not have high hope to cover up the whole amount. I and my sister are still students at the moment and hopefully, I will be getting a full-time job soon. Before that, I only wish there is something that I could do. Toto is like our youngest child in the family and we could not bear to give her up.
