By encouraging and facilitating work by women and men with disabilities, community-based rehabilitation (CBR) programmes can help individuals and their families to secure the necessities of life and improve their economic and social situations. By taking into consideration the needs and views of people with disabilities and making provision for their inclusion in national poverty reduction and other development programmes, opportunities for education, skills acquisition and work can be provided for people with disabilities and their families, enabling them to emerge from poverty. Accessing livelihood opportunities is one of the key factors in eliminating poverty.

William was born disabled. His father rejected him because of his disability, but his mother insisted he go to school. After completing primary school, William attended a boarding secondary school in Kisumu county - nyakach constituency, Kenya; then he went to a tutorial college where he earned a diploma in shoe making work. Parents of children with disabilities advocate for access to education, skills acquisition and work opportunities for their children. Disability is not just an individual issue; it affects the entire family and community as well. Families in poor communities usually survive through several sources of income. A family member with a disability can make a contribution to family life and livelihood, and therefore activities to support livelihoods must take the whole family into account.

What We Need and How You Can Help!

For children to be successful in school, parents and families need to be actively involved in their children’s learning. They need to become involved early and stay involved throughout the school year. In fact, many studies show that what the family does is more important to a child’s school success than how much money the family makes or how much education the parents have. We help our children to succeed by working with teachers to make sure that they provide curricula and use teaching methods that are based on strong scientific evidence about what works best in helping students to learn and activities that you can use to help your child acquire the skills to succeed in school.

Why we need YOUR help:

Because, it will help pay for the children's schools fees, buy school uniforms, foods, transport and other many essentials as part of developing the family, community and the nation.
