Help Sophia Teach in India Before Heading to College

In August of this year, I will embark on an 8-month long gap year with Global Citizen Year, or GCY, (globalcitizenyear.org) to help teach children of all ages in India and better the environment as well as myself.

At over $32,000 for the program, it doesn't come cheap, especially because in August of next year (2019), I will be attending college at Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU). Taking into consideration the cost of college and living in Hawai'i, my family and I cannot afford to pay the full price for GCY. Thankfully, I have received $22,500 in financial aid from the program-- a huge amount that I am eternally grateful for. This being said, the program will still cost my family and me $10,000, and I am expected to fundraise $2,500 to help GCY fund other fellows in the future. Although significantly less than the original price, $10,000 is still too much for my family to pull out-of-pocket.

I'm here today asking for as much help as possible to get me to be able to follow through with this amazing opportunity that has been presented to me and that I dream about doing. I'm very lucky to have a family and a system that supports me, and know that we will try our hardest to make this and my future post-secondary education possible.
