“Being the representative of South Africa in UNESCO, I, Sidney Nkuna, feel that the implementation of SDGs may not be as easy as it seems, and Asia World MUN is the best platform to discuss this matter. As a millennial, we need to be a part of this world agenda. Let’s discuss this issue together in AWMUN III with me! Growing up not only in a poverty stricken family or background, but a family that is supportive and respect cultural norms has moulded my personality and shaped the kind of a person I am today. A person who acknowledge, accept and welcome cultural diversity in the society. Moreover it has challenged me not to allow my unprivileged background to determine who I truly am in my journey of becoming. It has also challenged me to understand not only adaptability skills but also to develop hard work, commitment and consistency within myself. In addition it is evident to say that growing up has not been easy, as I have encountered many trials that life has thrown at me. Notwithstanding that I was able to pick up myself and push myself this far in my walk of life, by only believing that through every hardship there is always a blessing. As an individual I have a strong belief that ploughing back to the community is of paramount importance. In my journey of becoming I aspire to become not only a great teacher but also a businessman, an actor and an author for a lifetime. In a nutshell I want to become an agent of change or what we may refer to as the backbone of the society so that I can be an inspiration and most importantly a testimony to many children especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds like myself so that they can view the world in a positive perspective, as in the words of Napoleon Hill it is said that “whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve”. Moreover as an individual I don’t just talk the walk, but I walk the talk, and I have been reminded that instead of waiting for change, I should be that change. Being a representative to me simply means being a confident/assertive, well informed and well equipped representative with professional skills which include but not limited leadership, negotiation and diplomatic skills. I believe that being a representative takes someone who has a high level of professionalism, someone who is creative in nature, someone who has an ability and passion to build and grow relationships, someone who has an ability to provide innovative insights and most importantly someone who is willing to learn every step of the way. I fulfil my representative role in many responsible ways. Hence I regard myself as someone who believes that through every hardship there is always a blessing, that simply means I am I don’t fear commitment or hard-work, although I might come across challenges, because I know that challenges prepares one for better things. In order to fulfil my role I believe that I should remember my strengths in every situation, and some three of my top strengths include but not limited to optimism- regardless of the challenges I may face, I always remain hopeful. Secondly I have self-confident- I am always positive minded, I view the world around me in a positive perspective and I never allow my background and negative thoughts to determine who I truly am as individual. Also I have commitment and consistency- I believe that the best way to finish an unpleasant task is to get started, because without commitment you can never start and most importantly without consistency you can never finish. I would also fulfil my role by practising what I may refer to as “UBUNTU” which means humanness, and can be understood as the philosophy that sees human needs, interests and dignity as of paramount importance. This notion has informed my knowledge that whatever happens to the individual, happens to the whole group and whatever happens to the whole group happens to the individual. With that being said I can only say: "I am because we are and since we are therefore I am". In a nut shell I would present myself with dignity, respect and humanity.
