Help Nizam rebuild a home for this Ramadhan

Nizam (52) had led a relatively simple life as a security officer. That all changed when he was patrolling on an uneven surface so frequently that caused a hairline fracture which impacted his nervous system, consequently leaving him with postural issues. Soon, his injury spread further and rendered him unable to walk or stand for extended hours as his job as a security officer had expected him of. Nizam had no option but to quit his job to search for pastures elsewhere, whilst putting his house up for rent as a means of sustaining himself financially.

Nizam found work as a Grab driver, though his postural issues soon caught up with him. Breathing difficulties left him with no choice but to work 2-hour shifts instead of his usual 12-hour shifts, which naturally caused a steep decline in his income. Faced with a myriad of difficulties to his mobility, Nizam sought refuge in his sister, Bella, who offered him her place to stay as a caregiving option.

Bella herself faces several responsibilities and struggles as a caregiver as well. A self-employed massage therapist, Bella plays caregiver to her ailing mother and assists to care for her 5 nieces and nephews, whose father was involved in a traffic accident recently on 05 September 2021 which left him ridden with several health issues.

Nizam’s conundrum did not stop there. Tenants had fled the apartment he put up for rent without paying, and was left in total shambles. Rubbish was strewn all over the apartment, a breeding home for pests as it infested every nook and cranny of what was once his home. Unfortunately, Nizam’s family situation and a lack of proper social and financial support systems has left him unable to attend to his responsibilities as a landlord. His apartment was consequently left abandoned for almost a year, with pests and rodents having taken over the place. The recent worsening of the COVID-19 situation has only served to further worsen his predicament, as Bella faces the daunting task of being the sole caregiver for many of her dependents.
