Campaign Story
I have started this campaign after watching and reading so many news reports, blogs etc on the situation in Calais. I have always wanted to help others but I never truly understood the plight of those from far away places. My focus often lay with the needs of those in the UK. Whilst I will always care greatly about the needy in my home country I have spent a lot of time reflecting recently and realise just how lucky we all are in the UK and other developed countries. The migrants in Calais have nothing. They have left everything they knew. Many have seen their loved ones suffer, even die. People are crossing the seas in dinghies whilst I sit by the river Rhein drinking a gin and tonic! It's not right and I want to help. I don't care about any social or political issues this raises - all I want to do is afford people the dignity that I have taken for granted since the day I was born.
On Saturday 29th August myself and my husband plan to rent a van and drive a 1000 mile round trip to take urgent supplies to those in Calais. I am currently collecting physical donations of food, clothes etc from people in Switzerland but I am now asking everyone I know for help and support.
Please make a donation of whatever amount to help these poor people. My goal is to raise £1000. Some of this will have to be used to pay for fuel for the trip although we will endeavour to use the majority of the funds to buy food and whatever else is needed.
Thank you in advance!
3/9/15 - SINCE STARTING THIS FUNDRAISER I HAVE VISITED CALAIS AND HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF THOSE LIVING IN THE CAMP. MONIES RAISED FROM THIS POINT ON WILL BE SPENT ON ENSURING THAT THOSE IN THE CAMP SURVIVE THE WINGE

My experience of "The Jungle"
Update posted by Sara Dennison at 03:03 pmIt is difficult to know where to start....When I started to write this I was sat at home on my own and if I looked out of the window I could see the river Rhine peacefully flowing by. But then I closed my eyes and I saw the two little. . . . .
Thank you Basel!
Update posted by Sara Dennison at 04:08 pmAnother amazing day! Collections and deliveries from three very kind ladies! So overwhelmed by people's kindness! Thank you people of Basel
Thank you Hertz Basel!!
Update posted by Sara Dennison at 01:52 pmAs the date to go to Calais draws nearer I thought I best start trying to source a van. I considered various options but renting through a large company seemed the best way. I had an idea of cost however I was dealt a massive blow when I was told. . . . .
A helping hand from my husband!
Update posted by Sara Dennison at 06:37 pmHuge thanks to my lovely husband Tom who helped me carry 8 massive bags of clothe through the city streets of Basel and on two tram rides! (He actually carried 6!) We got lots of funny looks but we are proud to be supporting people in need!
PROBLEMS UPLOADING PHOTOS!
Update posted by Sara Dennison at 04:13 pmHi everyone! At the moment I'm struggling to upload photos so please bear with me! Hopefully this will be rectified soon. Thanks, Sara.
Collections in Basel!
Update posted by Sara Dennison at 01:56 pmToday we collected ten bags of donations from the kind people of Basel. Here I am with Daniel collecting 8 bags full of winter clothes! Transporting them home on two trams wasn't easy but totally worth it!

Sorry it's not much, I think it's great that you're doing this. It's important to remember that these people are just like us and not "lazy foreigners who want to steal our jobs". I'd like to think someone would show me this type of compassion if I was ever in that situation
