Help Mary Win the Fight Against Cancer!

Update posted by Krystal Choo On Nov 19, 2018

Such good news today! After the first cycle of chemo, mum has coped well and has energy to go for short walks and move about the house. Her blood test, renal and liver results are all within the normal range, because she’s been taking good care and eating well, so it’s a green light for the second cycle of chemo tomorrow.

Her hair has dropped off in large amounts, so she’s now sporting cool scarves and hats when she goes out. It feels funny to look at her and realise how little she actually is. I guess our parents will always be giants to us.

We are all keeping very positive and looking forward to beating this cancer once and for all!

We are raising the remaining $1800 for her fundraising campaign so if you’re able to, please help out. Any amount counts, and thank you all for your prayers, positive energy and well wishes.

Today, Mary bravely went for her first chemotherapy cycle. It was reasonably uneventful. Nurses were friendly and helpful, the people around were very nice, and the environment was calm. Being the first session, the drip was extended and diluted to allow the medical staff to see if there were any allergies or adverse reactions. Thankfully, she was comfortable and in good spirits, with no side effects so far. She even managed to have a bowl of porridge while doing chemo!

Both Douglas and Krystal were around to keep her company. Even though each patient is only allowed 1 visitor at a time, the staff were kind enough to allow 2. We will adhere to the rules the next 3 cycles so as not to make other patients uncomfortable.

She's now resting at home, and we pray that she doesn't suffer from the side effects too badly. We are also taking precautions not to have anyone infectious around her and over time her immunity will drop and being infected during this time is very risky. Lots of sanitiser and face masks!

Mary has been anxious about chemotherapy, and understandably so. Often we think of it as poison, and when we see cancer patients who are doing badly, we tend to relate chemotherapy to that.

Eventually, she still chose to do it despite being very reluctant because it helps to extend her life. We all believe it is the right choice and are doing all we can to support her. At 63, and with a successful surgery done, she has many more years ahead of her, hopefully cancer-free!

Please continue your kind encouragements, words of love and do help to share the fundraising campaign so that we can hit our goal!

Hi Mary, I pray that you will keep your spirits up. You have a family who loves you dearly. And God loves you dearly too. Keep up the good fight and I pray for full recovery.

Today, Mary received her results that her heart is healthy and blood work is normal, so she is able to start on chemotherapy soon! She's very nervous about it, but with support from friends and family, I'm sure she will be brave and stay focused on the big picture - to beat cancer and live a long, healthy life!

We had to go for chemo counselling today with the pharmacists, who graciously and patiently explained to us the side effects, what to expect, how the drugs work and lifestyle adaptations. After that, we purchased the recommended items to be prepared for the side effects; some non-alcohol mouthwash and toothpaste to help prevent sores and ulcers, lip balm, and meal replacement nutrition (peach flavoured) for days the nausea makes it hard to eat.

If you know Mary personally, please send her joy, encouragement, and uplifting messages to help her feel less anxious about this treatment.

Thank you for everyone's well wishes. We are almost halfway through our funding goal, so if you can spare a minute to share this campaign, it would be greatly appreciated by our family. If all goes well, next update will be on the 30th October, her first day of chemotherapy!
