Help Lois beat cancer!

Lois has always been a hardworking woman, a wonderful friend and someone who cares deeply for everyone around her. With her positive outlook and kind disposition, Lois brings a ray of sunshine with her wherever she goes. Steadfast and loyal, she has worked as a housekeeper and caregiver for the last ten years. All who know Lois can attest to her kindness, hard work, a heart-warming smile and her devotion to God.

She now needs our help and we, Lois’ family and friends, are turning to you for any support you may be able to give. Time is of the essence!!

In early 2019, after months of being in pain, Lois received the heart-breaking news that she had a large, cancerous, bladder tumour. After months of waiting, she was finally admitted to the hospital where the doctors were able to remove most of the tumour, but unfortunately not all of it. By the time she had her follow-up, the tumour had perforated the bladder wall and spread to the uterus, ovaries, and lymph nodes. In the months that followed, Lois continued to work but the pain returned. After many visits to the doctor, she was informed that she had Stage 4 cancer. Since the cancer had spread to nearby organs, she was told she would need a radical cystectomy (bladder removal), and a hysterectomy.

Lois was advised that prior to the operation, originally scheduled for the end of April, she would have to undergo both radiation and chemo treatments. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and delays, getting the treatments and surgery in a timely manner was not possible. She underwent 22 radiation treatments, before unfortunately developing a kidney infection caused by the nephrostomy tubes. Lois was hospitalized and her chemotherapy put on hold.

The delay in getting the appropriate treatments and the operation, has been a financial drain on Lois and her family. In recent months, Lois has had to travel from her home on the north coast of Jamaica to Kingston (100 km away) to receive her treatments. Since she does not drive, Lois has relied on public transportation and taxis to transport her to the clinic and hospital. The cost associated with the transportation alone, has meant that she has had to choose between being able to get to appointments, paying for her treatments, medications, and other essentials. To add to the hardship, Lois’ employer of 10 years passed away and she now no longer has a source of revenue.

Once Lois completes her radiation and chemo treatments, she will have to undergo the radical cystectomy. Post-surgery, Lois faces a lengthy recovery, with many follow-up appointments, specialized equipment and extra medical expenses.

Our goal is to raise enough funds to pay for the surgery and offset the lack of income during recovery, so that Lois can focus all her energy on getting through this extremely difficult time.
