Keolu, my 6-year-old Shiba dog, was diagnosed with a cancer. He just had a CT scan and the veterinarian said that in addition to the large mast cell tumor that we first found on his hip, he has a second tumor near his sacrum. Both are operable and in the next few weeks he will have surgery. He has now started with steroid treatment and after surgery, he will have chemotherapy.
Keolu has been my constant companion since he was an adorable puppy. We even share and celebrate a birthday together. He has a younger sister named Ippo who is healthy and is protective of him. Both love their long walks and even longer naps. And they both know words and commands in Japanese and English. And just like most Shibas, Keolu can be stubborn especially when out for a walk - deciding where he wants to go.
With COVID-19 and the loss of tourism in Japan, my main source of income as a professional tour guide has essentially stopped. I am still able to work at my second job, but Keolu’s medical expenses come at an unfortunate time. I appreciate anyone who is able to contribute and help offset his test and treatment costs. And both Keolu and Ippo appreciate your help too.
My goal for his fundraiser is to help with his test, surgery and chemotherapy costs. After the treatment needs are better defined, I might need to raise the goal to help cover future testing and treatment. And I’ll keep everyone updated with his progress.
Thank you all for your generosity. -Kazu & Keolu

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Update posted by David Polifko at 08:02 pmI want to sincerely thank everyone who so generously donated to Keolu’s surgery and treatment expenses. It was well over a month ago our veterinarian diagnosed his cancer and treatment began. After a successful surgery removed his two tumors, Keolu’s enthusiasm and energy made his incision heal slower than we. . . . .
Keolu is Back Home :)
Update posted by David Polifko at 07:41 pmYesterday Keolu came back from the animal hospital and he is happy to be back home to relax and recover. His surgical wound is still healing and needs a bit of daily care and he has to stay mostly inside (no long walks for a while). He also needs to. . . . .
Just a Little Longer
Update posted by David Polifko at 07:34 pmKeolu was supposed to come home tomorrow. But since he's such an active guy (he loves to move and jump up) some of his sutures tore, exposing the surgery incision and got a small infection. So his stay at the pet hospital will be up to another week until he's. . . . .
Successful Surgery!
Update posted by David Polifko at 01:40 amKeolu made it through his surgery today and is now going to rest and be observed for the week ahead at the surgery center. If all goes well, he’ll be able to come home next Tuesday! Once the pathology results are back, the doctor will then decide on the next. . . . .
Surgery Rescheduled
Update posted by David Polifko at 09:53 pmUnfortunately, the surgery that was scheduled this past Saturday has been postponed. The doctor who was scheduled to operate had to perform an emergency surgery on another pet. So Keolu will be going back on Tuesday the 15th Sept. But I was able to spend the weekend with Keolu and
Scheduled for Surgery
Update posted by David Polifko at 07:43 pmThank you again to everyone who generously donated to help Keolu so far – it means so much to me. Keolu had an appointment yesterday to see how his medication is helping to shrink the visible tumor. His doctor says it was working well and said he is ready for. . . . .

Dear Kazu, Wishing your best boy, MANY happy times together. He looks so handsome. (So do you!) in the pix you send David. I’m. Concerned, but I am assured that he got great care and is doing quite well post op. I’ve been in your situation so I know it isn’t easy. Best to Keolu and you, I am dog crazy too!!! Colleen
