From Timid Toddler to Chatty Star

Meet 5-year-old Annie Mangqisi. It’s hard to believe that not long ago she was painfully shy. When Annie started Pre Grade R at a local school in Kenridge at the beginning of the year, she began to blossom into the little girl she was always meant to be. From not knowing her colours and being afraid to speak, she’s hitting it out of the park in class and winning the hearts of her schoolmates with her bubbly personality. Annie’s glowing report this term was the stuff of dreams for her domestic worker mom Queenie Mangqisi. Queenie doesn’t want the dream to end, and neither do we.

Annie’s transformation is thanks to this extraordinary school with its deep empathy for its children. But her school is private and unsubsidised so Annie has only been able to attend with the help of donations. Our hope is to raise more funds for her move up to Grade R next year, preparing her to enter Grade 1 in 2021. At that point, we can apply for an excemption she’ll surely be given.
