Gender Links Mauritius, CSR number (NCSRF/2017/0111), opened a non-governmental and non-profit Halfway Home called ‘Safe Haven’ on September 1st, 2017 in Melrose, Mauritius.

This is the first Halfway Home in the Republic of Mauritius.

Our Halfway Home welcomes young women who have had ugly past experiences but who are endeavoring to render their present and future beautiful. We welcome young women who are reaching the age of 18 and who are no longer under the responsibility the Rehabilitation Youth Centre or the Correctional Youth Centre and other children shelters. Since they are 'adult' at the age of 18, they are left to fend for themselves without a roof over their head and are not even eligible for any social benefits.

They have gone through unimaginable experiences in this tiny span of their life. Some of them do not even know the meaning of the word “home” and have been moving from shelter to shelter since the day they were born. Growing up in such dire conditions where they lack love and attention & tend to easily tread on the wrong path.

Safe Haven provides them with a space to live, love and grow as young adults seeking guidance. They are empowered through in house training on 1. Self Esteem 2. Literacy and through 3. Art Therapy. Since the opening in 2017, we have accommodated 24 residents and keep on getting new requests everyday.

We have come across girls with a past experiences of child prostitution, sexual abuse and physical violence. There is an urgent need to help these girls and we cannot do it without funds to operate the Home. We need to pay a monthly rent, utility bills, internet charges, hot meals, hygienic products for the girls. We also need money to do a kitchen cabinet, buy iron sheets to cover the outside activity area, buy a washroom door, buy linens and clothes and above all buy food for all the residents.

We thus rely on your support to help us continue this work as we do not benefit from any grant from the Government at the time being. We depend solely on donations. We need help!

07 December 2018. While we are some weeks nearing Christmas, we would like to ask you to support us to be able to buy a Christmas tree, some gifts and meals for our residents. Despite being 18, they deserve the love and care that they haven't received in their childhood.
