“We all dream but dream differently, for those that dream in night only wake up to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes to make them possible” Gerald Baguma.

Climate change is a reality now and it will continue for decades and potentially centuries to come if we don’t stand up and act. Climate change is now something that we can no longer deny or shun away from because it is now a global issue which is affecting every category of people.

But when financial resources and leadership is virtually non-existent, the impact from natural disasters becomes extremely severe. As my friend Gerald Baguma experienced frequent and increasingly severe floods in Uganda that forced a number of school going boys and girls to drop out because their families primarily depend on Agriculture, he decided in 2018 to become an activist.

He is now the founder and coordinator of Climate Justice ClubUganda an initiative he started with the aim of launching the club in all the secondary schools in Uganda that will be accompanied with planting of trees and extending of climate Change Education.

Our secondary schools here in Uganda have got different social clubs like the wildlife clubs, Interact clubs, Rotary clubs and many more but we miss out on clubs that call for Climate Justice and Action and thus the call for a Climate Justice Club, a mission that is so challenging the fact that it involves moving to different schools across the country and also very dangerous because for example fellow activists organize strikes and trips to fight against climate change and also protect our beautiful forests where we always take part

But Gerald is a true visionary who refused to be silent. He really wants to make a difference for the climate and his people. And he wants to make things happen. Since August 2021 he has been working on the project to launch Climate justice clubs in all the 2994 secondary schools in Uganda with a target of planting 6million trees and also extending climate change Education.

Gerald targets the schools because students spent almost all their time in school and both their future and our future is being jeopardized. “Children and adolescents cannot miss school; they cannot miss their future”. Therefore extending the Climate Change Education will help them understand and address the impacts of the climate crisis, empowering them with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to act as agents of change.

Gerald feels proud when he notices that many of the trees he planted one year back are now over 2 meters and this inspires him to grow more trees. Trees are absorbing carbon dioxide which is necessary to slow down climate change. Uganda also has big problem with deforestation which makes this project even more urgent.

Gerald and his team have already planted more than 2000 trees since August 2021. For only 10$ Gerald can plant 30 trees. But it takes a lot of time and effort to buy tree seedlings and transport them. He is a determined man, and his vision is to launch climate justice clubs in all the 2994 secondary schools while targeting to plant 6 million trees. But biodiversity and protection of the plants is also very important. He uses more than 10 species while planting and the school with the help of school ambassadors is responsible to protect and take care of the trees until they are old enough.

When he is not planting or working with activism he is an ambitious student. He studies Information Technology, Solar Energy basics and masters not less than 7 languages!

If you decide to donate to Gerald’s project, I can assure you that he will use it well. He will do everything in his power to reach his target and to create a better environment for his people. An environment which is habitable and healthy now and for the next generation
