For those of you that know me, know that a few years back I co-signed a student loan for a very close friend of mine and they never made any payments. As a result of this, the debt has become my responsibility and has very negatively affected my personal credit. The loan has been charged off as bad debt by the debtor and is now with a collections company that has added many fees and percentages that have made the debt double the borrowed amount. The reason I co-signed for this student loan was because a close friend was in need, wanted to follow their dreams and had no one else in the position to help. I agreed to co-sign what they swore to me and promised me that they would make sure they made all payments, there would be no issues and they would do nothing that would harm my credit. As you see, this pledge and promise was not upheld. Since, I have tried contacting the borrower via phone, text message and e-mail with no reply, they are not the same person I remember any longer. I'm not one to reach out like this, however, I have reached a point where this has become crippling. I am able to just make the payments on all of my own personal debt, but I am unable to pay this debt as well. I have looked it to alternatives before coming to you all for help, but student loans cannot be included in bankruptcy and debt consolidation companies can't setup a plan including a student loan, only debt management which still makes it so I can't pay my personal debt and this debt. Due to this additional debt, I am unable to get any loans, credit cards and most importantly, a mortgage. I got engaged last year and am reaching a point in my life where I would like to purchase a home, but being the co-signer on this student loan being held over my head, this will not happen. So, I ask that if you can help in any way, please do, and if you know anyone that would be interested in helping, please share this with them. The size of the donation doesn't matter, just the fact that you're willing to help is amazing, thank you. Please note that any amount received over what is owed on the loan, will be donated to HUGS/LITI (Human Understanding and Growth Seminars/Long Island Teen Institute), a local drug and alcohol prevention/education program for middle school and high school students that I have volunteered with since 1995.
