We are helping to raise a small fund for our intern who have recently fell for an online scam. As silly as this may sounds, and you might wonder, “this will never happen to me, I won’t be so gullible”. Well, that was what she thought too.
so here is how it all began...
On a Friday morning, she received an email from our boss requesting her help with an urgent task. Asthis seems to be any other regular morning for us where we are being thrown with tasks, she gladly agreed to help.
The “boss” then asked her to purchase sgd1,000 value worth of Google Play gift cards and mentioned he needed it urgently and that all the cards have tobe activated and the code to be scratch off so that he can key into his account.
Still, she didn’t sense any red flags/alarming issue and just agreed to help while asking for permission to use the company card instead. The “boss” then replied to her asking her to use her personal account and money will be later on reimbursed to her.
she then went ahead to purchase the cards, send him the codes and waited for him to reply in the store. It was then when he requested for an additional 2k did she realised something was amidst..
she then quickly came back to the office and waited for the real boss’ meeting to end. That’s when she realised she got scammed when our boss said that he did not send any emails to her...
while this taught her an expensive lesson, all of us in the office have decided to help cover half of the cost.. We appreciate if you can help with a small donation. Thank you for all your generosity, we really appreciate it.
