On the 11th of April 2018 my wife and carer began feeling dizzy. She had suffered from laberanthitus in the past and we though this was happening again. The next morning she had lost the ability to speak coherently. An ambulance came and took her to the hospital where she was initially diagnosed with a brain stem stroke. She was transferred to another hospital with a dedicated stroke unit. The Consultant there questioned the diagnosis and within a very short time concluded that it was Gillian Barré Syndrome.

I watched over the next 24 hrs as my wife slowly dissolved before me. This person that I loved was disappearing as I sat watching. Nothing was happening.

Our biggest problem just now is being able to visit regularly. We don’t have a car and the hospital is over 70 miles away. We need to raise money to purchase a suitable car. To be used visiting my wife.

Then there is the house. Our home is very old, which we have always liked. It is heated by a wood burning stove and so the heating system is carbon neutral. There are no wall cavities. The walls are solid stone and the bath room is up the stairs. Which my wife won’t be able to use without aid.

The hospital send her home every weekend now. Since there is no active treatment that takes place over the weekend. This has shown us just what adaptations will be needed before she can come home permanently.

The purpose of this campaign is to raise enough money to get a suitable car and make the much needed alterations to the house. For example turning one of the down stairs rooms into a wet room with a shower and adapted bath. To update the heating system to a biomass boiler that will be outside. This is because the fumes from the stove have been affecting her breathing and as Guillian Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune disease I want to minimise all potential sources of illness. I also want to have exterior insulation fitted. This will further reduce the carbon footprint and benefit Maggie and my children
