Fundraiser for Maheen’s Cancer Treatment

Recently, Maheen learned that the cancer has spread and she is re-starting chemotherapy on September 18th. Additional support and donations are needed for immediate expenses.

Maheen was diagnosed with stage 3B cancer on September 19, 2022.

Since receiving the diagnosis, she has navigated more than fifty appointments with various specialists, doctors and oncologists and has undergone four cycles of chemotherapy (with eight more cycles to go, followed by surgery and radiation).

Treatment is predicted by doctors to be more than a year long.

Due to personal and medical needs coming on unexpectedly, it's important that Maheen has monetary support during this difficult time as she will need to take an extended leave of absence from work and does not have access to private health coverage or sickness benefits. Many of the medications needed during this time, including ones related to treatment, are not covered by the provincial healthcare system in Ontario.

Maheen contains multitudes and is resting in the heavy hearts of many as she goes through this daunting health crisis. She is so many things wrapped into one human bundle of joy: a generous and devoted friend, a mental health/trauma therapist, a clinical social worker, a mischief-maker, a curator of poetry and art, a connoisseur of delicious home-cooked meals, a vessel of love, a writer who is always insisting on the power of language with her work, a lover of the Mediterranean sea and above all else, a purveyor of justice and kindness in everything she does.

Our beloved Maheen has supported many through their hour of need in her work as a humanitarian aid worker in conflict zones alongside her lifelong dedication to refugee populations and political asylum seekers seeking mental health support all over the world. Having lived and worked in Egypt, Pakistan, Qatar, Afghanistan and Canada, she has spent her life advocating for and supporting vulnerable populations to have adequate and dignified access to support while facing displacement and persecution. In ways unimaginable, she has cultivated her life to be in service to others and to offering reprieve and calm during challenging times.

It's important that during Maheen's recovery and treatment, she is able to focus on her only task at hand, which is to face this time of hardship and uncertainty with as much ease as possible. Part of that ease will be our ability as a community to raise the necessary funding to support her during this time.

This care constellation is being run by folks who know Maheen through various aspects of a fiercely passionate life she has cultivated for herself over the years.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to support Maheen with living expenses, medications needed for treatment which are not covered through any government programs, transportation to and from appointments as well as financial support to manage the longevity of treatment and the uncertainty of what's to come.
