Dear Potential Donor,
We are İlkim and Fatih, two high school juniors, studying at Bornova and Kağıthane Anatolian High Schools respectively. Taking full advantage of the opportunities we were presented, we worked tirelessly towards improving ourselves throughout high school. Now, to further challenge ourselves, our goal for next year is to apply to the top universities in the US with our dream school being Columbia Engineering. To actualize this dream, we want to take the SAT/ACT, AP and TOEFL exams, enriching our applications and demonstrating our level of capability towards studying Industrial Engineering. However, the fees required for these exams are in US Dollars, meaning that as the exchange rate of Turkish Liras to US Dollars is 8 these exams are very expensive and even unaffordable for us.
As Fatih, I want to utilize my knowledge in design and industrial engineering towards automation, designing novel sensors integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. I am also interested in rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing. On a more personal note, my dream is to be able to inspire a teenager, struggling with his/her sexual identity. Last year, as my parents found out that I was attracted to boys, I witnessed the devastation in their eyes, looking at me like a mistake. Entering a rabbit hole of depression, I had felt as if all my hopes, dreams and goals were gone. Through my friends` unending supports, I eventually overcame the dark clouds that were circling over me and found the courage to build new dreams and goals, founding the Tabular101 page which aims to destroy taboos in society.
Believing that each and every one of us is responsible for giving back to the community, my goal is to help and inspire young children whose parents are divorced or deceased or who have been abused or refused by their parents. Having lived through a similar experience, in which my mother had abandoned and ceased all communication with me after a somewhat ugly divorce process, I vividly remember the feelings of loneliness and desperation as a child. The very first mothers day scrolling through my friends` posts on social media, I realized that my mother and I never had a photo together which was not outshined by the background fights, trauma, and distress. Over the past years, a very big influence for me was Fallon Carrington, a fictional TV character on the show Dynasty whose mother left her the same way as mine. Nevertheless, she becomes a very strong business women. I aspire to become a real life Fallon Carrington, so that I can inspire young boys and girl all over the world to believe in themselves and believe that they can be whomever they want to be.
