My name is Johnny and I’m asking for your help so I can leave the current violence engulfing my country, Colombia. I honestly wish I could do this on my own, but life doesn't always give that chance to everyone, which is why I please need your help.
I have been working hard and saving for a long time, but with the recent violence and the impact of COVID too, the value of the Colombian Peso has crashed. So the money I have saved has lost a lot of value and I don’t see a way to recover it.
Not so long ago, I worked in a hostel in Cali (my home city, which is now at the centre of violence), where I welcomed travellers from all over the world.
I showed them around, and took them to Cali’s amazing salsa clubs. Often we became friends, and I would invite them to my home for lunch, or to coffee in the market. Many people fell in love with beautiful Colombia.
I shared my country with many people from Europe, and now I’m asking you to please share your (much safer) part of the world with me, by helping me start a new life there.
Why I need to leave:
I’m sure you have seen the news about the current situation in Cali, which is drawing international condemnation. In short though, ordinary people protesting against the government have been murdered on the streets by the police, army, and other armed groups. It is very frightening, and is the most violent period I have ever seen.
For a while I tried to be resilient, telling myself I could handle the situation and continue with my life and job in Cali, but it has reached a point where it is not possible for me anymore. So I decided to sell my graphic design equipment and teaching tools (I’m a graphic designer and also teach Spanish) to pursue two temporary job offers in Europe.
But getting there and dealing with all the paperwork is extremely expensive. My friend Olga Dolistowska, has offered me housing in her studio apartment in Germany for a couple of months, but I please really need help to reach the next step!
Anything you can give would be hugely appreciated. From one human to another, thank you.
