Family of 4 – Asbestos in New Home

My family of 4 (husband, wife, 2 daughters, 8 & 2) just moved into our new home. We were previously in an apartment building. The situation turned bad once we discovered mold in the unit. The property provided no remedy except a humidifier. The issue continued to come back and get worse each time. We finally decided at our own expense to get the apartment tested to see if it was harmful or if we were worried for nothing. Turned out there were 3 types of harmful molds within the apartment and the inspectors informed us to get out as soon as we could. At this time we were living there for 7 years.

We started looking for a new place to live. At first, we were going to find another apartment, but for our growing family, it was illogical not to mention the increasing cost of rent. After looking at all our options we thought it would be the best option to look for a house. We scraped together what we could and 200 houses and 20 offers later we found our home. We knew there would be work to do to make it ours and keep it up to date and from our initial viewing we didn't think there would be much else.

Once we were in the house, we realized that was not the case. The previous owners had left us a mess. There was cleaning weathering and an overgrown yard to deal with before the colder months rolled in. There was also a lingering spell of animals that we had to deal with. So we set to begin some small renovations to make our home ours. To our dismay, we found asbestos tile in the basement that the previous owners just carpeted over.

I have an auto-immune disease, my husband has asthma and we have two young children so having this in our home is a big concern for us. Especially from just being a situation where we were breathing toxic mold every day to now this issue with asbestos is a lot to deal with. We just want a safe, healthy place to raise our family.

We are looking for help in covering the cost of the asbestos abatement of our basement to make our home safe to live in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The purchase and prepping of our home cut into our savings and this unforeseen cost will be difficult for us to cover.
