I have been operating a community based recycling project for the past two years in Zimbabwe, Ecoshield PL. My passion is the integration of social and environmental causes with community mobilization to finding sustainable solutions to built sustainable environments that are people centered. Over the past two years our organization has built a network of women groups exceeding 100 people in cleaning up the environment by picking up plastic waste, thrown away bottles, and other items that can be recycled. Every month this network of our environmental warriors have picked up in excess of 20 tonnes of plastic from the environment. We buy waste from them, and most of them had found livelihood in this cleaning adventure with us. Our job is to consolidate the waste from different groups and supply it up the chain to recycling companies that have the same passion in seeing a clean environment. Over the past two months and the lock downs that have gripped the world, most of our teams have had stockpiles of waste material which they cannot sell anywhere but to us. Most have families that were relying on this. We managed to reopen our company, and we wanted to buy most of their plastic which will store since the supply chains are still closed and they had relied on us for so long. I was an international student at Auburn University and I believe in hard work and community based solutions.
