Preventing human-elephant conflict, saving the crop yield of Ugandan farmers and improving the livelihoods of the local community.
How? Beekeeping! 🐝

Our project began at the Kibale National Forest, Uganda, in 2018, as an idea for protecting local farmers from lost crops and bringing money into some of the poorest communities in the country. Elephant raids in the area can damage a significant portion of a farmer’s crop yield, which leads to human-wildlife conflict. Compounding the issue, some local livelihoods still depend on (illegal) poaching and logging in the forest areas, which threatens the success of conservation efforts for rare species such as our closest relatives the chimpanzees. The main goal of Enjojo Farms has therefore always been to improve the condition of the forest, the elephants and the humans.

By providing training, beehives, and our constant support with management and marketing, we aim to educate farmers along the national park to become successful beekeepers and provide a market for their product. Through beekeeping, local farmers increase their income and develop a globally-demanded resource of honey, pollen and beeswax production. Furthermore, beehives can be integrated into so called beehive fences that stop elephants from entering the fields and reduces the deaths on both sites: elephants and humans.

With your contribution you not only enable us to train more farmers and build the first beehive fences, but further promote pollination and the reduction of poaching on the forest by providing alternative income sources, ultimately conserving local biodiversity.

Even small donations can make a huge difference:

$10 finances over a dozen seedlings of trees that serve as bee-forage

$20 enables us to buy local wood and manufacture a beehive

$30 supports the four-day beekeeping training course for one new farmer

$50 pays the monthly wage of one of our part-time area managers and ensure superb honey quality as well as professional progress of up to ten farmers

$400 covers a complete apiary package – hives, tools, gear, management and training – for one new farmer

$450 will cover the entire running costs of the project for a month

Our goal for this fundraiser is to help us expand our reach to more farmers, construct and monitor effective beehive fences, and to support the project towards long-term financial independence.
