Campaign Story
Do you believe children should be taught how to grow food in schools, and learn about biodiversity, healthy ecosystems and regenerating the environment?
We do, and with your help it can become a reality in the parts of the world that need it the most!
Lowani Misiska and Leaf of Life Permaculture in Schools campaign is creating Edible School Gardens in rural northern Malawi, central Africa, an area that has suffered severe deforestation, climate change and food insecurity, where pupils spend 8 hours at school without food and some don't even have breakfast.
Starting in 3 schools we are creating permaculture gardens as ecological teaching aids that provide fresh healthy organic food for the children. It will also act as a demonstration site for the wider communities to learn how to apply simple permaculture methods
The gardens will be living seed banks, growing as many varieties of fruits as possible to preserve the strains and save the seeds which will be made available for the community. It will also be a native plant repository so pupils will be able to familiarize themselves with edible weeds, local pollinator plants and medicinal plants.
We plan to install food forests in each school that contain permaculture circle gardens, fruit tree guilds, Hugelkultures, micro swale beds for water retention and Miyawaki Tiny forests for biodiversity.
Leaf of Life is collaborating with Lowani Misiska who will supervise and coordinate the project. Lowani has 15 years experience in reforestation and conservation, plating over 2.5 Million trees in his region. He has organized extensive tree planting and teaches farmers and community groups about sustainable farming practices and regenerating the environment.
Lowani will install the gardens with youth groups of volunteers from his community who are interested in learning sustainable agriculture methods they can apply themselves. He will supervise the gardens and train teachers and volunteers how to maintain them.

This looks like a very worthwhile project with a high benefit to cost ratio.
