THEY ARE DREAMING OF A NORMAL ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS

A SINGLE MOTHER WITH TWO CHILDREN LIVES IN INHUMANE CONDITIONS

"They are humble children, they do not ask for much, they have never asked me for anything more than I give them," Svetlana Sorovic says.

In a dilapidated shack on Tuški put in Podgorica, lives a single mother, Svetlana Sorovic, with two children.

The social assistance he receives is not enough for basic foodstuffs either, so they barely make ends meet.

"I get 146 euros from social assistance, I buy food from it than I return the money I owe and then I have nothing again," Svetlana says.

They live, she says, day by day, dreaming of a nicer, cleaner and warmer place to live. She desires the most one thing and it is an apartment.

"The apartment, because it's a big moisture here. I don't even have a bathroom, you see, it's cold."

Svetlana repeatedly applied for a shelter, and each time she was rejected.

"I was applying for an apartment, then they told me for the first time I needed 50 points, than 12 points because of my son not having a care, and now they told me that I didn't have social assistance last three years, which is not true, because where would I get the money if I didn't receive it," says Svetlana Sorovic.

Since she is raising two sons, the older of whom is an epileptic, she also needs money for medications. But the living conditions, she says, do not prevent her sons from being good children and good students, without high demands.

"They are humble children. They don't ask for much. They have never asked me for anything more than I give them."

She is aware, she says, that she is not the only one who needs help. She fears the shelter conditions will further damage her sons' health because of the leaking shack, which consists of two rooms and a small kitchen, which they have lived in for two years,

"My father gives them, but neither can he. He is seriously ill. Her brother cannot help as well. I don't want to be also a burden to him. Many times they ask if I have and I say I have."

The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare explains that they are paying one time financial assistance and other material benefits in the domain of social and child welfare in accordance with the law, but have not told us what they are specifically doing in the case of the Sorovic family.
