Hello! I am Elizabeth Woo, a final year student from Singapore Polytechnic. Recently, we held a carnival inviting the Sungei Road Vendors so that they could increase their sales through the student population, and for the business students to learn soft skills in marketing and product acquisition.
However, as we interacted and spoke with these elderly vendors, we found out that they were living a really hard life. Some of the vendors only earn $5 a day from sales, and some none. This revelation was a shocker to many of us as we often spent our allowances away recklessly.
The vendors are no longer situated in Sungei Road (which has since been used for land redevelopment), and are now running about in various pasar malams. For instance, they are now holding their pasar malam opp Choa Chu Kang MRT.
Do read my post here: https://www.facebook.com/elizabethwoojiayee/posts/...
Some elderly requires money to pay for their $160 rent at the Choa Chu Kang pasar malam, and some other do need money to eat.
If you feel something for these elderly and want to help them, please pledge a donation. It doesn't have to be a large amount. It can be just $5 that we take as a small spare change. You have no idea how happy they were when my friend and I offered them can drinks. Their smiles lit up bright as if it painted colours to the horizons. We just hope that we can help them at least have something to eat as they go through their golden age. No elderly should be starving at this age. They should be enjoying their golden years.
If you're unable to pledge cash donation, you can also help by donating your unwanted clothes, cassettes tapes and any other items to these vendors! This is so that they don't have to spend money on acquiring things from the Gurung Guni uncle to sell things at the pasar malam!
Do contact me through Facebook Messenger if you'd like to know more/the exact location to donate your items!
