WE ARE FEEDING MORE THAN 2000 REFUGEE FAMILIES AND INFORMAL SETTLEMENT FAMILIES

Despite a range of policy measures were taken by different ministries to ensure that the pandemic is contained, it is clear that the pandemic has worsened the condition of the most vulnerable poor communities. It is disturbing to note that, all over the country, local governments unleashed its law enforcement agents or hired goons to destroy the shelter of and evict the most vulnerable populations in our major cities, at a time when there was a legal moratorium on evictions and all should have been observing the lockdown regulations at home.

Though a lot of solidarity has been given, there has been little or no support given to the most vulnerable foreign nationals in South Africa. A few groups in the private sector have offered some aid after building much of their wealth through the work of others. State-wide and provincial government has put some insufficient relief structures to assist some vulnerable communities, but they are not easily accessible and few have been informed about it. And the process is always riddled with corruption and favouritism.

As a result, most migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and undocumented migrants are left out.

These groups, so-called foreign nationals, are often lost in the crowd and in times like this they can be soft targets for Afrophobic or xenophobic attacks. I say so-called because an African is not a foreigner in Africa. Many of these non-locals are at the mercy of unscrupulous landlords who milk them without any regret, even in times of crisis, especially since non-locals often have less legal options and resources.

Given that many people in South Africa survive by informal trading and casual work it is not a secret that the majority of these will not be able to pay rent, let alone food for their families. Already a number of companies have indicated that they will not be able to pay for work not done. Many of the families are struggling with food and many shop owners have hiked their prices for essential food. It is clearly a battle for survival as many others are calling for charity.

Rather than an individualistic battle of all against all, the best way forward is a battle for solidarity with all for our mutual well-being. As we step forward through the social disaster that our failed system has provided us, we must ask critical questions about how we can best care for everyone in this pandemic and about the kind of world we want beyond it.

It is against this background that the Elastos Foundation was formed, as a means for us to care for the most vulnerable. Part of that work is in exposing the harsh realities the vulnerable classes here and all over the world experience.

Foreign Nationals/Refugees in South Africa are especially vulnerable to coronavirus and other diseases, due to high geographical mobility, instability, living in overcrowded conditions, lack of sanitation, and Elastos Foundation is covering the gap by giving food and other essential values and to access decent healthcare during this difficult times of Covid 19 and the South African Level5 National Lockdown.

We wouldn't do anything to further help these vulnerable souls without getting support from the public donations and dedicated Artists who are giving a helping hand though it is not enough.

We therefore invite you toto make a donation for this initiative with any amount and help you can to curb hunger and the spreading of Covid19 to this specific population through our Organisation Elastos Foundation that is thriving to help our vulnerable people.

Any funds donated will go towards supporting this initiative aiming directly at refugees and informal settlement families.
