Cheyenne River Youth Project

In this project i need to do different outreach programs, which addresses issues that arises from poverty and are specific to the reservation. These issues ranges from having enough food, staying warm in winter and coping with the substance abuse problems of family members. I will generally be working with groups of children aged 4 to 12 and with teens aged 13 to 18. I am expected to help where needed and this means some hours may be spent working in the garden, warehouse, cleaning with the Family Service Program, and doing office work while other times may be spent with the children. During the school term the youth center is open in the afternoons  and during the summer holidays it is open all day. There is no typical day at the center and activities vary according to the time of the year and how many children are at the center. Activities includes: library time, arts and crafts, helping with homework, working in the organic garden, outdoor games, serving meals, fundraising drives within the community and helping with the general upkeep of the center. It will be great opportunity for me to build meaningful relationship with the children and youth at the center.
