I am a postgraduate student at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London and I am writing my dissertation on census data and practices in Burma/Myanmar. I am trying to understand how census data and practices have created and later informed ethnic identities from colonial times to present days. The first census in 30 years has just taken place (March-April 2014), with a controversial clause requiring people to specify their ethnic identity. This research is therefore timely and necessary, particularly in light of recent ethnic unrest in the country. Your contribution would help me collect data, speak with census data collectors and interview various stakeholders in Burma.
