Dear Reader and Potential Donator
I currently house and care for 49 cats. I am not an NPO (as yet) but, I am looking into forming one one.
I do not get any funding and donations come via friends only which is why I am publicly appealing for assistance.
38 cats in my care are from abused and unfortunate backgrounds.
Here are a couple of their stories.
Grey DSH, Age: 18
Thomas came to me when he was 5 years old, this boy was so badly beaten that he was paralysed in his hind legs which took about 2–3 weeks to heal due to bruising and swelling. The so-called owners that did this to Thomas threw him across a vets table with their money and said that they didn’t want him anymore and that the vet should euthanize. He couldn’t and I was called to help. It has taken Thomas a lot of years to trust humans again and he still gets fearful and hides and screams a terrible fearful scream that cannot be explained.
Cream DSH, Age 10
Forrest when he was a kitten was placed into a pillowcase with his brother and two sisters, they were then taken for a car ride onto the highway and thrown out. A kind lady saw what happened and immediately stopped, unfortunately their one sister took the brunt of the throw and she did not survive, Forrest and his other two siblings did, his brother and his sister found homes quickly after rehabilitation but, no one wanted Forrest and so he stayed, I could not put him into a cage after what he had already been through and I spoilt him rotten because of his trauma. Forrest was diagnosed with an illness that is still yet to be named as he loses protein, and has to eat raw meat to aid in the protein loss, currently he looks like a cat that never eats as he lost a lot of weight trying to figure out what was wrong with him. With losing protein Forrest has also been diagnosed with an asthmatic lung on the left side. He is currently on two different asthma pumps as well as cortisone tablets.
White Calico DSH, Age: 7 years
Sophie came to me at 4 weeks of age, people had saved her from a school trying to rid their school of the feral cats, these people as kind as they tried to be did not know how to care for a baby kitten. Sophie had been kicked which caused damage to her right eye. After numerous attempts to try and save the eye it was decided that when she went in for her steri at 6 months the damaged eye would be removed. Sophie has had no further ailments after the eye removal but, her sinuses do get blocked up every now and again which she requires a course of antibiotics
Black Tabby with White, Age: 10 Months
Mika came to me in December with a litter of 3 kittens. Mika being a baby herself was unsure what to do, her babies were only 5 days old. Mika was skinny and afraid, she did not know what was going on and what these humans were going to do to her and her babies. When she realised that I would not harm her or her babies this young mommy put all her trust in me. Her one baby got sick and we tried to save him she knew when I eventually took him away to be euthanized as there was nothing more we could do for him that I was doing the best thing possible, she did not hold it against me and when I got home and I told her how sorry I was, she lay by me to comfort me instead of the other way around. Mika’s two other babies are now 6 weeks old, they will be up for adoption but, they will stay with their mommy until they are 12 weeks.
An adoption package will apply for these kittens. Mika will be sterilised when her kittens are weaned and because she is an adult, if no one wants to adopt her, she will stay with me.
Silver and black with a touch of red DSH, Age +/- 7 years
Madusa was at my vet, I was there visiting my furry boy that was in hospital. When I walked into the hospital I had a vision (this was odd for me as well) I saw a cat going to its food bowl to eat and as it got there it got smacked and each time it tried to go back to its food it got smacked, I saw this cat get kicked and I did not understand why I would have such a vision. I took by furry boy to the couch to sit with me and as I walked past a cage and there was the cat from my vision, she had the same red marking on her forehead, I could not believe what I was seeing! My vet came and sat with me and said that she was a feral, I told him she is not feral she has been abused, her body language would tell you that she wanted love but, as soon as you put your hand into her cage she would attack. A week later again with my visit I could see my vet was very upset and I asked him what the problem was, he told me that everyone was too scared to clean her cage and that he had no one to work with her so he had to make the decision to euthanize, I asked him to test her for FeLV and FIV and if she was negative to steri her and then I would take her home and work with her. Her tests were negative and she was sterilised, I took her home, I had her in a cage and at night I would take her out for 2 hours to run around, after day 3 when I got home she was standing at the door of the cage and when she saw me she meowed, I said hello and we had a bit of a conversation. As I was going to walk away she meowed again so I told her that if she wanted out then she would have to deal with the rest of the household and I would not accept any fighting, she meowed in agreement. I told her that because she is part of the household she must expect that I will touch her and kiss her and love her, again she meowed in agreement. I opened the cage and Madusa walked out, these days she likes to take a ride on your back and she loves kissed, the one thing that makes her unique is that she loves it when I put my finger in her mouth and I rub her pallet. The vet does not believe me that she has settled so well because when she has to go to the vet she does a 180 degree turn around and becomes that vicious little monster that he believes she will always be but, I can promise everyone she is not, she is a very sweet and lovable girl
Devon Rex, Age: 8 years
The reason I have Cleo is because her owners wanted to euthanize her, their reason for this, “we just don’t love her anymore” I do not understand this as Cleo is such a loving girl and has such a beautiful personality and such a small meow, from the first day, I fell in love with Cleo, her hair was matted (this is odd for a Devon as they have short hair) I had to bath her and the water after her bath was black, her fur was hard, oily and matted but, after her bath and a good brush her hair is soft, silky and shiny. No doubt that she hates to be bathed but, she handles is well enough and she gets a bath once a month now. Cleo unfortunately because the previous owners didn’t seem to care for her, needs to have her teeth removed, the dental issue is too far gone to save her teeth. This cost is R3500.
Cornish Rex, Age: +/- 6 years
Jagger is a pedigree Cornish Rex and I am not sure of all of his history except that he was dumped at 5 different shelters because people saw a pedigree and wanted him but, did not understand the breed. Cornishes LOVE to talk and they are very much people cats but, they love to sit high up somewhere and look down on the world which is their right as they are a very special breed.
I lost my Cornish baby just over a year ago and when a friend of mine asked if I would help with this Cornish boy I jumped at the chance. I was told that this boy was not people friendly and that he always hid away and never came close to anyone and wherever he was hiding he would constantly meow. Well, he arrived and I did not know what to expect, had a good chat with his “owners” and I let him be, it was not even two hours later and Jagger and I were having a full on conversation on my bed and not once has he hid away in fear or have to talk to himself as we constantly have conversations and he puts his paw on my head to tell me it is time for kisses.
These are just a few of the stories and there are many more to tell. I am the one people call or ask for help when no one else can help them or all the shelters are too full or if there are abused cases where special care needs to be given.
I don’t know how to ask for donations as I have always done this on my own.
I need help now, I need food donations and assistance with my vet bill as well as assistance in building a cattery that is attached to the house so that the cats can be inside and outside but, in a safe environment.
I have fed all my cats on Royal Canin, Hills and IAMS only.
I have tried giving them other food mixed in with their normal food which causes diarrhoea throughout the entire household and I cannot risk that again so that is what makes it difficult asking for donations as well.
If anyone is willing to donate, I will give you my vet's details and reference. Currently I have a vets bill of about ZAR R90,000 (yes, you read correctly) which I am hoping to try to also get donations so I can reduce it. I currently pay whatever I can monthly but its very difficult to keep feeding and providing quality care for my rescue kitties.
I can do this two ways, I can give you the account details for Hills. Buying from them give me a R200 discount on a 15kg bag of food than what I would normally pay at the vet or vet shop. Or I can collect Hills, Royal Canin or IAMS in the Gauteng region.
Unfortunately I was retrenched from full-time employment in November 2015 and since then have been really battling to find work in the difficult economy we are experiencing.
I would also be extremely grateful for any work opportunities or referrals that may fit my skill set and abilities. My most recent position was a Call-Centre Manager and I am passionate about customer service and delivery. I am happy to send my CV to anyone who is willing to give me an interview and a possible job opportunity in Johannesburg or Pretoria. I can be contacted on [email protected] directly for this.
I can provide all details of vets bank account and food donations to anyone who can assist. I do not use any donations for personal use - only for the care of my rescue fur babies.
