Campaign Story
Message from Trevor and Rene:
This is our 10 year old daughter Carmen Schoonraad.
Carmen was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia in November 2019. This is a rare condition in which the body stops producing enough blood cells and in some severe cases stop producing blood all together.
As a result she has very low platelet cells which means her blood cannot clot and could lead to severe internal as well as external bleeding at any time. Carmen gets a platelet transfusion every 3-4 days.
Carmen is one of a twin and unfortunately her sister Kendra is not a match for a bone marrow transplant.
Carmen is currently on an Oncology treatment plan at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical center in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Following her first round of Chemo in January, she has been battling infections and still remain in hospital.
Due to her low immune system, Carmen in unable to attend school and she tries her best to stay up to date by attending online class on a homeschooling system.
When Carmen is discharged she will need to remain in a sterile environment to prevent more infections until such time that her bone marrow starts producing blood with the appropriate levels.
Your donation will assist us to create a safe, sterile environment for Carmen, Education and medical bills not covered by our medical aid insurance.
Thank you very much
Trevor and Rene Schoonraad
