You've seen the telly, you've seen the point scoring from fumbling leaders too. Whatever your thoughts, on Britain’s doorstep is a shantytown complete with scabies and bronchitis. Families sleep in flimsy tents in bitter cold. Children play in mud and rubbish.

Volunteers do their best, bringing food, clothing, tarpaulins; criminal gangs do their worst, preying on people’s desperation.

Care4Calais work alongside the stretched French charities distributing the right donations to the right places, and feeding the 1000s of desperate people there. The two core principles are:

1) getting aid out to the camp asap and not in sat in storage somewhere

2) getting the types of aid that the refugees need, not just what people want to give (surprisingly, yes sometimes this is a problem)

Care4Calais also want to provide regular meals and urgently needed firewood.

All funds raised will go towards the provision of the services outlined above and here. A generator for a community costs £200, a gas stove and gas bottle £100. Firewood is needed but in great quantities, and on a regular basis - to fuel the whole camp would cost around £2,000/week.

A group there have set up an amazing facility to provide proper meals. They provide nutritious and healthy meals for just 50p each. But even for 600 people this is £300/day.
