Care for Claire – Battling with Stage 2 Breast Cancer

These past few months has been tough and a roller coaster for all of us because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Everyone has been paranoid and scared of the inevitable outcome of this outbreak.

Claire Anne is a sister of my dear friend, Fortune. At home, we call her K Anne/Girl/Beshie. She is very bubbly and free-spirited woman.

“Last August 2019, she noticed a lump on her chest. She had her mammogram in St. Lukes, Manila. She was advised that she does not need to worry about it as it is non-cancerous. However, few weeks ago, she noticed a new lump (different are) on her chest. She was alarmed and decided to see a doctor for check-up. She was referred to see a specialist. She has undergone series of tests and the results was not in favour to her. She was diagnosed of Stage 2 Breast Cancer (Invasive). Invasive cancer is aggressive, the cancer cells might spread fast through her internal organs such as lungs, liver, bones and other integral organs. It grows and infiltrate the healthy tissues of her body.

She had her PET scan last Saturday (28 March 2020) to identify clearly the areas of cancer as well as to verify if the cancer cells has spread to the nearby parts. The result will be out on Tuesday (31 March 2020). On the same day, she will have her follow up appointment with the Oncologist in Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Her treatment will be discussed on that day. There are few types of cancer treatments: (1) Chemotherapy; (2) Radiation; (3) Immunotherapy to name a few.

One of the treatment she has to undergo is surgery. Mastectomy surgery is highly recommended for her case as the cancer cells are aggressive. Her operation will be scheduled as soon as possible. We know that surgery cost in Singapore is very expensive. On her current situation, it is not feasible to go back to Philippines (due to lockdown). We already asked our friends in the Philippines, the priority of the hospital right now is to contain and cure the Covid-19 patients.

The doctor (oncologist) advised her to undergo immediate chemotherapy which will start in a week's time. This means that she will be needing financial help to complete the cycle of treatment.
