Campaign Story
14 years ago I gave my job up as head Veterinary nurse in a large animal hospital in the UK to work with street dogs in India.I set up the CARE project-
Community based,
Animal Welfare,
Rabies protection,
Education.
I live in a small fishing town Mamallapuram ,South India. A world heritage site, famous for its temples, and stone carvings. We do not have a Vet in the village,so other than a handful of animal lovers there is no one to CARE for the animals. We give basic treatment for mange and wounds ,and any dogs that are seriously ill or injured, are given first aid and taken to Vets in Chennai for treatment.( A 90 minute drive away ).
Many dogs suffer as a result of road accidents, and this year alone 10 dogs have needed treatment for serious injuries. In 2 cases limbs have been amputated.
Dogs that need nursing or cant mange on the streets are taken to my home, where I can give them the care and love they need to recover.
The dogs are all street dogs, and as a tourist town its important we keep the dogs as healthy as possible.
Over the past 6 months due to Corona virus we have also been feeding about 150 dogs every evening, along with about 30 cows.
They normally get their food from people using food stalls and tea shops, but due to the lock down this has not been possible. It takes us nearly 3 hours to ensure they all get fed.
Over the past 12 years over 800 dogs, with the help of the Blue Cross of India have been neutered, and over 1,000 dogs have been vaccinated for rabies.
We also vaccinate dogs against Distemper/Parvo virus.
To be able to continue my work I need your help.
Just £10 will look after one street dog for a year, this will cover booster vaccinations, parasite control.
Just £15 will pay for a dog to be neutered and rabies vaccinated.
